About The Education Project
Free 1:1 tutoring connecting volunteers with K-12 students.
TEP was launched by students in March 2020 in response to pandemic learning loss and remains entirely volunteer-run. Tutors have delivered more than 50,000 hours of free 1-on-1 tutoring, and 83% of surveyed parents report marked improvement in their child's academic performance.
Tutoring is 100% free for families. Students are matched with a tutor in about a week, and sessions combine the IXL learning platform with each tutor's own subject expertise in math, English, and science.
Tutors set their own availability, work with the same students over a term, and build the kind of teaching experience that matters for careers in education, medicine, and public service.
TEP also travels. In January 2026, student volunteers spent a week at Epping Forest Primary School in Jamaica teaching math lessons and career readiness workshops.
How it works
From first step to real work.
- 1
A family requests a tutor
Parents request free tutoring at theeduproject.net. Students are matched with a volunteer tutor in about a week.
- 2
Tutoring, one on one
Sessions are virtual and one on one, pairing the IXL learning platform with each tutor's own strength in math, English, or science.
- 3
The same tutor, all term
Tutors set their own availability and stay with the same students across a term, so every student has a consistent mentor.
- 4
Beyond the screen
In January 2026, TEP volunteers spent a week at Epping Forest Primary School in Jamaica teaching math lessons and career readiness workshops in person.
