Start a chapter

  1. 14Why start an HFSO

Students. Meet HF Buddy, learn what a Humanity First Student Organization is, and see the national programs your chapter can join.

    1. Hi, I'm HF Buddy. I'll walk you through starting a chapter.
    2. An HFSO is your school's Humanity First Student Organization.
    3. You lead service on your campus. A national team stands behind you.
    4. Your chapter can join Gift of Health, Gift of Sight, and The Education Project.
    5. Students of every background are welcome. Let's walk the path together.
  2. 15Submit the Interest Form and join the chat

Students. Open Join HFSD, submit the Interest Form, and get added to the Onboarding HFSOs Telegram chat, where other founders and the Outreach Team can help.

    1. It all starts with one form. Open "Join HFSD" and press "Interest Form".
    2. Tell us your name and your school. Then share how you want to serve.
    3. Press "Submit". The Outreach Team will contact you.
    4. The Outreach Team adds you to the Onboarding HFSOs Telegram chat.
    5. Ask anything there. You're not alone. Other founders are starting alongside you.
  3. 16Book your consultation call

Students. The Outreach Team sends a welcome email with a booking link. Pick a time for a 30-minute consultation call, or book from the website's Book a meeting page.

    1. The Outreach Team emails you a welcome and a booking link.
    2. Pick a time that works for you. The call is about 30 minutes.
    3. Or press "Book a meeting" on the website any time.
    4. Your confirmation arrives by email. You are on your way.
  4. 17The Welcome Packet and your school's rules

Students. Read the Welcome Packet, then find out how clubs register at your school and who can be your faculty advisor, so you arrive at the consultation call ready.

    1. Your welcome email includes the Welcome Packet.
    2. It explains every step and the good standing requirements, so nothing surprises you.
    3. Before your call, learn how clubs register at your school.
    4. Ask student affairs about registration, and about a faculty advisor.
    5. Have questions? Write them down. You are ready for the call.
  5. 18The consultation call

Students. On the call, the Outreach Team shares the HFSO Handbook and the consultation presentation with the Constitution template, and you leave with clear next steps.

    1. Meet the Outreach Team, who will guide you on your call.
    2. They share the HFSO Handbook and the consultation presentation.
    3. The presentation includes the Constitution template, called the Model Constitution.
    4. You'll leave with clear next steps for your school, and people to ask.
  6. 19Constitution and MOU

Founding presidents. Draft your Constitution from the template and have your board approve it. Once your club is registered at school, a short call with the National Executive Director and the HF-USA Liaison approves the Constitution and signs the MOU.

    1. Draft your Constitution from the template. It's simpler than it sounds.
    2. Next, ask your founding board to approve it.
    3. Register your club at school. Then the MOU is ready to sign.
    4. The MOU is the yearly agreement between your HFSO and Humanity First USA.
    5. Then meet the National Executive Director and the HF-USA Liaison on a short call.
    6. They approve your Constitution and sign the MOU with you. That's a big step.
  7. 20Sign the Social Media and Photography Protocol

Founding presidents. Before activation, the president, and the social media lead if the chapter has one, reads the HFSO Social Media and Photography Protocol Agreement and signs it for the chapter through the Protocol Agreement form. The agreement and the form are linked at the end of this tutorial.

    1. Before activation, the president reads the Social Media and Photography Protocol Agreement.
    2. Open the "Protocol Agreement" form and sign it for your chapter. It protects everyone.
    3. Your social media lead, if you have one, signs it too.
    4. Then share it with each board member who manages chapter social media.
  8. 21Join the Alumni Ambassador Program

Founding presidents. The president and graduating board members register with the HFSD Alumni Ambassador Program, using the University form or the High School form, so HFSD and Humanity First USA can stay in touch after graduation.

    1. Graduating one day? HFSD and Humanity First USA want to stay in touch.
    2. The president and graduating board members register now.
    3. University chapters use the University form.
    4. High school chapters use the High School form.
    5. Find both forms on the website under "After HFSD".
  9. 22The MAIN Update Form and activation

Founding presidents. Complete the MAIN Update Form and upload the signed MOU. Once the Protocol Agreement and alumni sign-ups are in, your HFSO is activated and joins the mailing list, the HFSD Telegram group, and your regional chat.

    1. Complete the "MAIN Update Form" and upload your signed MOU.
    2. HFSD confirms that all three items on the checklist are done.
    3. Your HFSO is activated! Welcome to the national network.
    4. You join the mailing list, the HFSD Telegram group, and your regional chat.
    5. Now you're ready to plan your first event. We're glad to help.
  10. 23Host your first event

Founding presidents. Five ways to start, drawn from the HFSO Interest Meeting Resources: an interest meeting with the short template, tabling at a club fair, a Gift of Sight eyeglasses drive, a tutor sign-up for The Education Project, and a shelter meal service. Then focus on one initiative and spread the word. The end card links every next step.

    1. Your first event can be simple. Here are five ideas to start with.
    2. Host an interest meeting with the short slide template.
    3. Find it in "Interest Meeting Resources". Add your school and meeting details.
    4. Table at a club fair with treats, trivia, and a sticky-note board.
    5. Run a Gift of Sight drive to collect used eyeglasses.
    6. At a general body meeting, recruit tutors for The Education Project.
    7. Serve meals together at a local community shelter.
    8. Start with one initiative. It gives your chapter a clear direction.
    9. Advertise a week ahead on social media, and keep your board on Telegram.
    10. You're ready, and we're glad you're leading. Choose any next step below.

Run your chapter

  1. 24File with the national team

Chapter boards. Find every national form on the Resources page: the MAIN Update Form and MOU, the monthly report, the funding request form, and the chapter guides.

    1. Open "Resources". Every national form and guide is in one place.
    2. Start with the MAIN Update Form, required every school year.
    3. Sign your chapter's MOU each academic year.
    4. Send the "Monthly report" every month to record your chapter's work.
    5. Request chapter funding with the "Funding request form".
    6. Lean on the chapter guides to plan events and finances with confidence.
    7. Some guides say "Request a copy →". That emails HFSO Support, who will gladly help.
  2. 25Get your board into HFSD Workspace

Chapter boards. Open the Workspace page, open the app or request access, follow the six-step guide, then use the HFSD Workspace tutorials.

    1. Meet HFSD Workspace. Your board plans tasks together, all in one place.
    2. Find "Workspace" in the top strip of any page.
    3. Press "Open HFSD Workspace", or scroll to the six-step guide.
    4. Your board signs in with Google, then joins with a code or invite link.
    5. The "HFSD Workspace" tutorials on the Help page teach every screen, step by step.

Fundraise

  1. 26Why your chapter fundraises

Everyone. HF Buddy opens the series: what HFSO fundraising pays for, the verified 2025 total, and the one rule this tutorial teaches. Pick the format by your time, budget, team, school, and goal, then send every gift through Humanity First.

    1. Welcome. I'm HF Buddy, and I'll help you plan your chapter's fundraiser.
    2. HFSOs help fund Humanity First programs in health care, clean water, and food security.
    3. Together, HFSOs raised $148,317 for Humanity First USA programs in 2025.
    4. Whatever your situation, this guide shows which fundraiser fits your chapter right now.
    5. Choose by time, budget, team, school, and goal. Then start wherever you are.
  2. 27One program, one goal, one page

Chapter boards. The foundation of every fundraiser: choose one Humanity First program, set one goal people can picture, get HFSD approval before promoting, and collect every gift through the official Humanity First giving page so every donor receives a receipt.

    1. Strong fundraisers start with one Humanity First program.
    2. Give people one clear goal they can picture and feel good about.
    3. Get your fundraiser approved through HFSD before you promote it.
    4. Every gift goes through the official Humanity First giving page.
    5. Never use a personal payment account. A chapter app needs HFSD approval first.
    6. That way, every donor receives a receipt.
    7. Put the page link in your Instagram bio and its QR code on flyers.
  3. 28If you have one week

Chapter boards. The one-week plan: a small sale or drive tied to your goal. Approval and a table on day one, a flyer with the QR code, a suggested-gift sign ($5, $10, or $25), tabling in pairs at a busy spot, and thanks within 48 hours. Food follows your school's rules.

    1. With one week, run a bake sale, chai bar, or snack cup table.
    2. Check your school's food rules, label allergens, and keep food covered.
    3. Give a free treat to anyone who donates eyeglasses or hygiene items.
    4. Post a suggested gift of $5, $10, or $25 beside your QR code.
    5. Table in pairs, then warmly thank supporters and share your total within 48 hours.
  4. 29If you have one month

Chapter boards. The one-month plan: a campaign around one program goal with a visible progress tracker and two or three small events, or a give-back night with a local restaurant or cafe, with outreach three to four weeks ahead and every agreement in writing.

    1. With a month, build a campaign around one program goal.
    2. Hold two or three small events, all pointing to one visible progress tracker.
    3. Or partner with a local restaurant or cafe for a give-back night.
    4. Start outreach three to four weeks ahead.
    5. Ask each business for a reply within four days.
    6. Put every agreement in writing. It protects everyone involved.
    7. Ask the vendor to send their gift through the Humanity First page.
  5. 30If you have a semester

Chapter boards. The semester plan: a charity lunch or dinner as your signature event, in six steps. Design and book the room, secure every school approval, bring in partners, advertise, run the day on one itinerary, and follow up.

    1. Have a semester? A charity dinner can become your signature event.
    2. Book a large room and get every school approval first.
    3. Ask businesses for food trays or a share of proceeds. Licensed caterers are simplest.
    4. Choose a ticket with a meal, or free entry with gifts encouraged.
    5. Present the cause with approved Humanity First stories and photos, then serve.
    6. Run the day on one shared itinerary, so everyone knows their part.
  6. 31Match your budget and your team

Chapter boards. Start where your resources are. Zero-cost formats such as a panel or screening with a donation QR code and an eyeglass collection box, written approval before any spending, never your own money, co-hosting for new chapters, shared outreach for established ones, and matches only once confirmed in writing. Larger formats are planned with HFSD.

    1. No budget? Host a panel or screening with a donation QR code.
    2. Ask a local eye clinic to host a collection box.
    3. Get written approval before any spending. Never use your own money.
    4. Newer chapters can start small, and co-host with a larger club for support.
    5. Established chapters can share outreach and plan larger formats with HFSD.
    6. Announce a match only once the donor confirms in writing.
  7. 32Fundraise for a specific program

Chapter boards. Match the event to the program you are funding: kit packing nights and white coat photo booths for Gift of Health, eyeglass drives with optometry or pre-health clubs for Gift of Sight, an education panel that recruits tutors for The Education Project, and your own chapter page for the current national campaign.

    1. For Gift of Health, try a kit packing night or a photo booth.
    2. Co-host with pre-health clubs. Gifts go to the student medical missions campaign.
    3. For Gift of Sight, run an eyeglass drive with optometry clubs.
    4. For The Education Project, host a panel and recruit tutors.
    5. For the national campaign, join with your own chapter page.
    6. Medical missions run through HFSD. Please ask the national team first.
  8. 33High school and university chapters

Everyone. The principles are the same; the approvals differ. University chapters can use campus rooms, club funding, and campus vendors. High school chapters start with school-approved sales, drives, and awareness tables, plan every event with their faculty advisor, and follow school rules on permission forms and off-campus activities.

    1. University chapters can use campus rooms, club funding, and campus vendors.
    2. High school chapters start with school-approved sales, drives, and awareness tables.
    3. Plan every event with your faculty advisor. Follow school rules on permission forms.
    4. Check your school's food and fundraising rules before you announce anything.
    5. Ask before using your school's name, and use only the logo files HFSD provides.
    6. Wherever you study, every chapter sends gifts through Humanity First.
  9. 34Spread the word, fill the room, invite gifts

Chapter boards. The growth loop from the Awareness, Attendance, and Instagram workshop: announce two weeks out on every channel the same day, collab post with partner clubs, send every RSVP a personal reminder the day before, use a 30-second pitch (the need, the program, the result, the ask), put the QR code on every flyer, table, and slide, and follow the Protocol Agreement in every photo.

    1. Announce two weeks out on Instagram, group chats, and email, the same day.
    2. Invite partner clubs to collab post so you reach both audiences.
    3. The day before, send a personal reminder. It works better than a flyer.
    4. Use a 30-second pitch: the need, the program, the result, the ask.
    5. Put your QR code on every flyer and slide.
    6. Share an approved Humanity First story, with dignity, before the ask.
    7. Every photo follows the Protocol Agreement your president signed.
  10. 35Close the loop

Chapter boards. Gratitude and reporting earn the next gift and the next partner: thank every donor and business within 48 hours, post the recap within a day, record totals in the monthly report and the finance report, keep contact details only with permission in the chapter's shared drive, debrief as a board, and invite everyone to the next event. The end card links every next step.

    1. Thank every donor and business within 48 hours. Gratitude goes a long way.
    2. Tag partners and share your verified total, with thanks, within a day.
    3. Record your totals in the monthly report and your finance report.
    4. Keep contact details only with permission, in your chapter's shared drive.
    5. Never share them with sponsors. Their trust comes first.
    6. Debrief while details are fresh, and warmly invite everyone to the next event.
    7. Thank you for serving. We're grateful for you. Every next step is below.
